Carnitine exists
in two forms: L-Carnitine and D-Carnitine. Only the L form of Carnitine
is available from natural sources and is physiologically active in the
human body. Non pharmaceutical L-Carnitine is made
by removing the D-Carnitine from synthetic DL-Carnitine.
This separation process always results in some residual
D-Carnitine in the final product.
In fact, the
D-form is biologically inactive and because of its potential negative
effects, the FDA has long maintained that D-Carnitine and D,L-Carnitine
are not generally recognized as safe and are therefore illegal food
additives.
That is why you want an
L-Carnitine with no impurities. The ALCAR you purchase from some
sources (especially the cheaper ones that some offer at a low
price with additional product or say they are "professional grade")
will contain non-pharmaceutical grade ALCAR made in China and is almost
guaranteed to have significant quantities of toxic D-Carnitine. This
defeats the purpose for which you buy the L-Carnitine or Acetyl
L-Carnitine.
Those of you who used to or still
doubt me now have plenty of evidence in the news of tainted or
less than pure Chinese products, so be cautious! (I have been
issuing this warning for over 2 years!)
Beware, this is
one case in which cheaper is definitely not better.
Also be wary because some are selling the inexpensive
non-pharmaceutical ALCAR at prescription grade prices and making huge
profits off of unsuspecting people.
