about the manufacture of Acetyl L-Carnitine
(ALCAR):

The
ALCAR in LifeSpan
and NP* is
pure and pharmaceutical
grade - the most expensive and highest quality you can find, made by Sigma-Tau.

There are 2
major players when it comes to ALCAR, Sigma-Tau (Italy)
and Lonza (Switzerland). I used to caution against buying any ALCAR if
not not from one of these two companies. Now I just urge you
to purchase a pharmaceutical grade product from any source - but make
sure it is truly pharmaceutical grade. If it is not, you have a
cheaper and inferior ALCAR made in China which will contain
impurities in the form of d-carnitine. Make sure you
only purchase ALCAR that is pharmaceutical grade.

Why is it
imortant to have pure Acetyl L-Carnitine?
Carnitine exists
in two forms: L-Carnitine and D-Carnitine. Only the L form of Carnitine
is available from natural sources and is physiologically active in the
human body. Non
pharmaceutical L-Carnitine is made by removing the
D-Carnitine from synthetic DL-Carnitine. This separation
process always results in some residual D-Carnitine in the final
product.
In fact, the
D-form is biologically inactive and because of its potential negative
effects, the FDA has long maintained that D-Carnitine and D,L-Carnitine
are not generally recognized as safe and are therefore illegal food
additives.
That is why you
want an L-Carnitine with no impurities. The ALCAR you purchase
from some sources (especially the cheaper ones that some offer at
a low price with additional product or say they are "professional
grade") will contain non-pharmaceutical grade ALCAR made in China and
is almost guaranteed to have significant quantities of toxic
D-Carnitine. This defeats the
purpose for which you buy the L-Carnitine or Acetyl L-Carnitine.
Beware,
this is one case in which cheaper is definitely not better.
Also be wary because some are
selling the inexpensive non-pharmaceutical ALCAR at prescription grade
prices and making huge profits off of unsuspecting people.

According to The
Prediabetic
Epidemic - Nutrition Science News, 3/01 - The therapeutic
dose for ALA is 600 mg per day (the amt in 3 capsules of Life
Extension Complex). In the United States, it is sold as a dietary
supplement, usually tablets of 100 mg or less.
